Character Information:
Name: Alek Reyne
Canon: A Song of Ice and Fire - Blood of Dragons MUSH
Canon Point: Year 168 AC
Age: 50

Type of Character: Canon OC
Reference: Alek Reyne was born the third son of the Lord of Westerland House Reyne of Castamere, a rich, powerful house, as many in the Westerlands of Westeros are, having benefitted strongly from the gold and silver mines there.

As a child of a Lord, he was sent to squire with a knight. As his father exerted considerable influence, Alek, and his older brother Geremy, were sent to squire under Ser Loren Lannister, Heir of Casterly Rock. During his years under Ser Loren's tuteledge, he grew incredibly close to his older brother, the two Reynes becoming inseperable.

When Alek was 12, the war known as the Dance of the Dragons began. A civil war for the right of succession to the Iron Throne, with claims to the seat by King Aegon II Targeryen and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen following the death of their Father, King Viserys I Targaryen. The Lannister Bannermen, including House Reyne, supported King Aegon II, and marched to war against Princess Rhaenyra's forces.

It's during this long and bloodied war that Alek honed his skills alongside his brother, but also saw many horrors. During one of the final battles of the war, Alek Reyne, merely 14 years of age, saw his brother be stricken down with a fatal stab through his chest, a stab that had been meant for Alek. The Lannister cohort was routed, Ser Loren desperately trying to keep himself and his men alive. Fuelled by rage, Alek started hacking his way through enemies, managing to cut down enough to give Ser Loren a path. The Lannisters held, saved by the actions of this squire, and Ser Loren promised Alek his knighthood when he was of age.

Seeing his beloved brother killed in front of his eyes changed him. Alek Reyne became a lot more distant, sombre. Gone was the young lad who ran amok in Casterly Rock, following behind his older brother. He devoted himself more to his studies, as though burying the pain inside of him.

Another 4 years under Ser Loren, and, as promised, Alek was knighted. He returned home to Castamere, vastly different than before. Things started to change, however, as, upon his return, his Lord Father placed him in command of the Reyne troops. Alek devoted his time to training and drilling the men under his command, becoming a well-respected commander among his troops. His men trusted him, and he trusted them.

Not long after Alek's return to Castamere, his father betrothed him to Ameria of House Serry, a lesser-ranked House in the Reach, the marriage being advantageous to the Serrys and provided a link between the Reynes and the Reach. With Ameria, he had four children, three born before the Conquest of Dorne; Bella, on whom he doted, the child raised in a manner befitting the daughter of a lord than a knight, Alayne, who was less spoiled than her sister, but still raised in a loving manner by her parents, and Wyllis, a son, squired to Ser Elmer Crakehall, and later knighted.

Following his father's death, Alek's elder brother, Bertrand, assumed the Lordship of Castamere. Promptly, Alek was removed from command of the Reyne forces, a position he had held for quite some years, and replaced him with his son, Victor. Alek, surprisingly, suffered this quite well, the elder knight, instead, being appointed Victor's advisor. Victor, however, did not appreciate being tutored by his uncle, and ignored most of his uncle's advice, which Alek, in turn, spoke badly of his nephew to his men behind his back.

Participating in the Conquest of Dorne, led by King Daeron I Targaryen, also known as the Young Dragon, Victor continued to ignore his uncle's counsel, which led to the decimation of the Reyne host. Alek, furious with his nephew, hosted a permanent grudge against his nephew for that, as he watched the young lion's misguided strategies kill the men he painstakenly trained.

Following the Conquest, upon returning to King's Landing, Alek stayed, despite Victor ordering the Reyne troops to Castamere.

Merely four years later, the Dornish rebelled, calling more troops from King's Landing to help keep the unruly southern country in check. Alek, this time riding under the king's banner more than Castamere's, joined the fray, but was struck down attempting to defend the Planky Town by Ser Laurent Dalt, the Sand Dog, one of Dorne's more fierce fighters.

King Daeron I Targaryen met his untimely end at the age of 18 in the Prince's Pass, where the Dornish ambushed him under a banner of peace. His cousin and Kingsguard, Prince Aemon Targaryen, The Dragonknight, was taken prisoner. Daeron's brother, now King Baelor I Targaryen, later known as Baelor the Blessed, helped broker a peace, and even saved his cousin, Prince Aemon.

Alek returned to King's Landing, having made acquaintences along the path to Dorne. Ser Luthor Rivers, bastard son of Belson, called the Bad, Smallwood and Ser Farin Prester, heir to Feastfires being amongst them. Upon returning to King's Landing, Alek was made Deputy Warden of the Kingswood, alongside Ser Farin, and under Ser Luthor.

Participating in a tourney at Highgarden, Alek's nephew, Ser Josmyn Reyne, was kidnapped by Reachlords in an attempt at revenge for the accidental death of Ser Obyn Meadows earlier in the tourney. Alek fought to retrieve his nephew, but was injured in the melee outside Grassy Vale, seat of House Meadows. Meadows demanded a duel to the death and Alek, still injured from the fight hours before, chose a proxy to fight. Alek's proxy succeeded, and Ser Josmyn was returned, however, a lasting feud between House Reyne and House Meadows had began.

Following this, Alek returned to King's Landing, continuing his duties as deputy Warden, fending off bandits, smugglers and the like. Eventually, he accepted promotion to Commander of the Mud Gate, choosing this position so he could still aide his comrade, Ser Luthor, to some degree. From the Mud Gate, Alek accepted re-assignment to the Iron Gate, and currently serves as Commander of the Watch for that area.

Setting Concepts:

Westeros: One of the continents of the world in which A Song of Ice and Fire takes place. Loosely modeled on Medieval Europe, in particular a British feudal system, Westeros has been plagued by unrest and war scanning back thousands of years. Split into seven areas, the Seven Kingdoms, each Lord of these areas swears fealty to the King of the land, who takes seat in King's Landing.

The Seven Kingdoms: Originally seven whole kingdoms before Aegon the Conqueror, these kingdoms were reformed by the Targaryen invader. From the northern-most point downwards, they are; The North (House Stark), The Iron Islands (House Greyjoy), The Riverlands (House Tully), The Vale (House Arryn), The Westerlands (House Lannister), The Crownlands (House Targaryen), The Reach, (House Tyrell), The Stormlands (House Baratheon), and Dorne (House Martell). House Targaryen holds control of all of these areas barring Dorne.

House Targaryen: Known as "the blood of dragons", House Targaryen has ruled Westeros for centuries, following the conquest of King Aegon I Targaryen (Aegon the Conqueror). A family of Dragonriders, House Targaryen used the power of dragons in the Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms in order to secure their seat as rulers of the land. House Targaryen often interbreed with each other in order to keep the bloodline pure, brother and sister often wed to achieve this.

Dragons: Although they had all perished by Alek's canon point, the dragons of House Targaryen were still a formidible force, and one the Targaryens prided themselves on. Ancient beings of magic and fire, their history is a long and complicated one, however, years of inbreeding, in the same manner as the Targaryens themselves, proved fatal to their species. The last Targaryen dragon died under the rule of King Aegon III Targaryen, who earned the name "Dragonbane."

King's Landing: The capital city of Westeros. A huge, sprawling metropolis where lord and smallfolk alike aim their sights to secure wealth, fame and fortune. The King sits upon the Iron Throne in the Red Keep of King's Landing, which is currently King Baelor I Targaryen.

City Watch of King's Landing: Also known as the "Goldcloaks" for the colour of their uniform, these are the men that protect the city of King's Landing and act as a sort of police force under the King's power. The Commander of the City Watch has several Commanders of the Gates into the city, The Dragon Gate, The Iron Gate, The Old Gate, The Gate of the Gods, The River Gate, The Lion Gate, and the King's Gate. Each commander is responsible for their own Gate, and an area of the city surrounding it.

Iron Throne: Coveted by many, the seat of government for the entirety of Westeros, currently held by House Targaryen. The Iron Throne was created by Aegon the Conqueror on completing his quest to rule Westeros. It was forged from the metal belonging to surrendered swords of his enemies, and heated by the dragon Balerion, the Black Dread. It is a twisted mass of jagged edges and sharp metal, purposfully designed to be uncomfortable, as Aegon said "A king should never sit easy."

The Red Keep: The castle in which the Targaryens ruled from. Built by the second king of Westeros, Maegor I Targaryen (Maegor the Cruel), the Red Keep is a mass of secrets, hidden passageways and other trickery. It is said that Maegor had the builders put to death in order to preserve it's secrets.

Personality: Ser Alek Reyne is an enigma.

On the surface, he is chivalric, as one would expect from a knight. Correct forms of address, bows, motions of his hands and head... It's all practised to an art form, but it never feels insincere. He is easy to smile, guide a conversation, compliment and generally seems pleasant to talk to under normal circumstances.

Despite this, he is a man with a lot of pride, having worked hard to get to his current position, holding one of the highest ranks in King's Landing. He's a lauded battle commander, having fought in many of Westeros' civil unrests, wars and conquests, grizzled and tempered by battle, with a steel to his eyes that is as sharp as his blade if crossed.

However, underneath the chivalry and the soldiering is where you get into the meat of Alek's personality; He is entirely amoral. Having his innocence shattered at a young age by war and loss, Alek has come to worship power... and will stop at nothing to garner it. He isn't obvious, however, learning that the right word, social connection, or bribe can oil the way a lot quicker than steel... Not that he's above that, he'd just rather not to.

Being a Lord's son, Alek has been trained in the art of the Court. As mentioned above, he is, above all, polite and courteous to the people who deserve it, or act in kind. He will often attach himself to persons of power, searching for an oppertunity to increase his own renown.

Grudges can easily be formed if Alek feels he has been slighted. The person in question may not even know it has happened, at least, until Alek decides to act on it. There will be no mercy if the old lion's honour has been besmirched, as he works his utmost to keep it spotless.

Since he's from a wealthy family, Alek is used to living a decent life. Since he is not the Lord of Castamere, however, he has also learned to be able to distribute his wealth, plan and save, where necessary, and invest in worthy business ventures. He is scrupulous with his spending, and, despite being a knight, would be a decent accountant, if he decided on a career change.

That isn't to say that he is completely uncaring. It simply takes a lot to shatter through the layers of Alek's persona. Only a few have managed it, and the majority of those are his immediate family.

Alek values both showmanship and pragmatism, able to exude the air of a gentleman knight and a grizzled battle commander. He enjoys keeping people guessing, keeping them on their toes and never quite knowing how to place him... as long as it's favourably.

Ultimately, Alek Reyne is a good ally... when it suits him to be. Whilst he won't burn bridges entirely, he will be looking for any and all oppertunities to exploit friendships and business deals. Being taught by the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, and his own family, he brings his scrupulous attitude to knighthood and chivalry to all portions of his life and business. He is ruthless on and off the battlefield, despite his age, and is someone you do not want to be on the bad side of.

Appearance: Standing 6'2", Alek is a strongly-built man from his years as a soldier and a knight. Medium-length blond hair falls about his face like a mane, extending down in sideburns, a beard and mustache. His eyes are a glittering green, wrinkled in the corners from an easy smile.

Chosen PB is actor Jamey Sheridan due to his likeness.

Abilities: Despite not having supernatural abilities, Alek is no slouch. He's a trained knight in Wessterosi form, being an expert horserider and jouster, whilst also being able to fight from horseback. He is trained in a multitude of weaponry, but his chosen weapons are a greataxe when on the ground and a lance when on horse.

He is also trained in business, coming from a rich family, he is capable of negotiating services and goods in a swift, skilled way... often coming out on top. He is good at handling money, and receiving a return on investments. This even goes as far as being able to talk down hostage situations and the like, Alek priding himself on his diplomacy, also

Good afternoon. For those whom I have not had the pleasure of meeting, I am Alek Reyne, and, quite clearly, new to the city. I come to you in order to find out what manner of occupation is available to... I believe we're called Foreigners, correct?

[The name doesn't sit right with Alek, but... When in Pentosh?]

My skills as a fighter are, perhaps, the most pertinent. I am a trained knight, and have seen many battles and wars pass through my home. I also have skill in law enforcement. [A pause.] As for less... martial skills, my family are skilled in handling gold and silver, we are well known for our business skills and managing accounts. King's Counter, I may not be, but I know how to balance books and run things smoothly.

If my skills entice someone, feel free to contact me. I'll admit, this... technology is not something I am used to, so it may be worth visiting the hotel for a speedier response.

Thank you.
